Canvassing for Canvas: Cheap Awnings
Awnings are wonderful things, able to not only protect selected areas of
your home from the ravages of the elements, but also to extend the living and entertainment area of your home by a
small but significant fraction, not to mention serving some decorative purposes as well. The best part, though,
comes when you begin to consider cost as a factor: awnings, essentially being harnesses of canvas and wood or
metal, are not very expensive to have installed into your home. And this idea of cheap awnings is
what this article is all about.
Awnings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the simplest
harnesses that look similar to canvas sails to the most colorful designs made up of domes, spears and other
intricate structures. Different kinds of awnings also come with a variety of features that can enhance both
ornamental and practical value. The feature of being retractable is a good example of this.
Of course, awnings have to be custom made in order to fit the
doorway, window or other opening you have chosen to install one in. To ensure good protection and aesthetic
value, they must be made to fit the specific measurements of the said opening. Of course, you can have really
cheap awnings by making them yourself with pieces of canvas drop cloth, metal grommets (and an installation
kit) and several lengths of rope, which can all be obtained in your local home improvement store. Of course,
you have to do all the measurements and you have to install the entire harness yourself, but this the option
to turn to for those who are most strapped for a budget for one of these shelters.
Of course, it is also wise to find ways to reduce the costs of
having an awning installed and maintaining it. Wood costs less and is lighter than steel, but may be prone to
termites and other wood pests. Likewise, canvas may cost less than aluminum, but both materials will still
have their own strengths and weaknesses. The surface of the awning itself should also be washed regularly, as
it is routinely exposed to the different elements (sun, rain, wind, hail and snow) and thus it is prone to
being worn out quickly. Mild soap is fine for canvas, but aluminum surfaces might require stronger cleaners.
Do your research in order to avoid using the wrong maintenance agents for the wrong awning
materials.
Cheap awnings are not impossible to have. All you need to do is do
your research on the right types of materials and styles, and a little elbow grease (if you’re willing to
make your own awnings) and you will be on your way to having an addition to your home that is both
aesthetically pleasing and practical.
